A Brief Update

Hi Everyone. I know that many of you are very concerned for me as a result of the recent covid-19 outbreak and city-wide lockdown in Shanghai. So, I wanted to send a short message to let you all know that I am doing okay. Thanks to neighbors and friends within my neighborhood, I have plenty of vegetables, rice, and vegan meatballs for me to eat and plenty of cat food for Charlie and Scottie, too. I’ll be writing a longer, more detailed post, this weekend and will share with you much more about my experiences so far. However, since I know many of you have either reached out to me or my parents, I just wanted to let you know that I’m okay. Also, for any of you celebrating Passover this weekend, I hope that you have lovely and meaningful Seders, whether in person or on Zoom. Additionally, for those of you who are celebrating Easter this weekend or currently observing Ramadan, I hope that you also have a meaningful holiday.

In peace,

Jesse

  1. Hi Jesse,
Thanks for the update. I’m glad you have plenty of food and are hanging in there. I hope things improve soon.
    Love,
    Emmet

    1. Thanks Emmet! Me too. I really want to visit you and have you meet Scottie and Charlie. Hopefully this summer.

  2. Thanks for this update, Jesse! So many people have asked after you. It is a relief to know you and the felines have food and are safe and well. Love you and miss you, Mom

    1. Thanks Mom! I’m fortunate to have Scottie and Charlie to keep me positive and company. Glad I have enough for all of us to eat!

  3. Thanks, Jesse. Good to know that you are both safe and that you have access to food and the like. It must be very hard for everyone at this time because of what looks like a very draconian approach to the numbers of infections – an approach that seems not to have been particularly effective in preventing infections even while creating so much stress and strain in the Shanghai community.
Hope you have a wonderful seder. I will be offline over the weekend in observance of Pesach. Stay safe and stay well.

    1. Hi Bernard! You are right that this approach to solving covid is quite draconian. It’s effectiveness is definitely unclear, since cases continue to rise (though the rate of rising is slowing). And it has definitely added a fair amount of stress to the people in Shanghai. Thank you for the Passover wishes. I’ll be doing Zoom Seders this year. I hope that you have meaningful Seders and look forward to hearing from you once you come back online.

      1. Thank you for the update on your quarantine time again. I’m sorry it had to fall during Passover and Easter.. Glad you adopted the cats so you have company.
Dana is supposed to have Passover but she just told me her boyfriends daughter has Covid. Since they were all together for a sleep over at Dana’s home this past weekend we’ll have to see if Dana and Mark test positive. Yes, the new variant is becoming more prevalent. Sol is scheduled for his next booster at Roswell in ten days. I was going to Rite Aid where l received my last few vaccines.
Our weather since we came back from Florida last week has been very nice, so l’ve been outside walking. Sol and l enjoyed our two months away doing walking, boating, fishing , concerts and visiting with friends . The weather was 70’s and 80’s the whole time we were away.
Enjoy Scottie and Charlie and take care of yourself, virtual hugs cousin.
        Halli

        1. Thanks Halli. It certainly is disappointing to not be able to gather for Passover, but I’m glad I had already adopted the cats when it happened! I’m sorry to hear that your Passover plans are somewhat up in the air. I hope that Dana and her boyfriend’s family don’t all test positive and that they do, they recover quickly. I’m glad to hear you and Sol are boosted (or will be soon). And it’s wonderful you could enjoy time in Florida! I hope you and Sol both have a lovely Passover!

  4. So lovely to see you with Charlie and Scotty!
I am glad you have supplies… and that you are a good cook!
    Thanks for the update!
    Take good care!

    1. Thanks Aunt Pam! I’ll post more photos of Charlie and Scottie (and my supplies) this weekend! Hope you have a lovely Passover!

    1. Thanks Ryan! Great to hear from you. I hope the situation improves and that things can start to loosen soon, too.

  5. Hi Jesse,
Glad to hear that you’re doing well under the trying circumstances….and your cats seem pretty happy! Wishing you a Zissen Pesach!

    1. Thanks Phyllis! It’s so nice to hear from you. The cats are definitely happy to have me around all the time! I hope and Barry have a lovely Passover!

  6. Hi Jesse,
We have been thinking about you and are so glad to have this new posting and a positive update on how you are doing. We remember how worried we were at the very start of the pandemic and it seems to have come full circle again for you there. We certainly understand how tough it can be sometimes since we were very locked down here in Italy in the past. So happy to know you have your cats to play with and you are all well fed. Hopefully this will end soon and you can get back to the activities you were enjoying there. We wish you a Happy Passover. We are having our seder here with just the two of us and one friend is going to zoom in from Portland, Oregon. Should be lovely. I’m actually making the matzo balls right now. We eagerly read your posts whenever they come out and love hearing about your life in Shanghai. Looking forward to the next one this weekend. Take care. Ciao. Amy and Terry

    1. Hi Amy and Terry! Thank you so much for writing. It’s really nice to hear from you both. The lockdown has been challenging at times, but the cats are certainly helping me feel better about it. I hope that you both have a lovely Passover Seder! Hope your matzo balls were delicious!
